Distinguished and Famous people from Woodanilling
🌾 Elijah Quartermaine
Elijah Quartermaine was among the early colonial pastoralists grazing sheep around Woodanilling in the middle of the nineteenth century. He had migrated from England in 1838 and worked around York and Guildford before developing interests farther south. The district's water and grazing country attracted pastoral leases well before the railway and townsite arrived. His association is that early farming activity, part of a much longer landscape history already held by Aboriginal communities. The family name remains woven into accounts of the wider Katanning and Woodanilling districts, where pastoral work preceded the later towns.
🏪 R. L. Richardson
R. L. Richardson took over the Piesse firm's stores at Woodanilling and Katanning in 1904, bringing decades of retail experience to the business. The enterprise expanded through a network of branches serving surrounding farming districts. His son Max later entered management, continuing a family retail story behind the familiar shopfront. At Woodanilling the building also accommodated the post office, making commerce and communication close neighbours. The connection is practical local business: supplies, mail and household purchases linked the store to daily life in a growing railway and farming community.
